Our Goals and Struggles...

For the 20 Time project, which is defined as devoting 20% of our class time this semester to finding a solution to a problem, we, Abhay and Shayan, are striving to solve a problem in the health/ medicine field. We decided to create a product for osteoporosis patients to increase their bone strength and hopefully cure them. We have chosen this topic because bone deterioration affects a large percent of the population eventually in their lifetime, so we feel that this solution will be very beneficial to the world. Although this product may sound like science fiction, we conducted research to support our hypothesis. Fortunately, with the basic understanding of both the anatomy and physiology of bone structures, we were able to expand our pool of knowledge through fundamentals including Wolff's Law and the Piezoelectric Effect. However, most of the research we conducted was through online sources and a lot of the material presented is extremely complex and advanced. Although we are having trouble understanding some of this complex material, we plan to consult a medical professional who may give us useful and intelligent insight into the product we plan to create in hopes that they can further our knowledge and understanding of this topic. We will measure our progress by regularly consulting with an orthopedist and asking how realistic and practical our solution is, and then posting to this blog through text, pictures, and other means in order to reach out to our audience. Moving forward, we plan to try to understand the material we are presented with and consult medical professionals if possible.

  1. Wow, this is a really unique idea! I applaud you two for not being afraid to delve into topics you may not currently know a lot about, and for reaching out and taking hold of resources around you (the medical professional). You could even talk to Ms. Lenz or other science teachers about this, as they may have information and ideas to add. This topic is especially relevant because we as humans lose bone density as we age, and a solution to this problem could quite possibly save the world. As for keeping track of your progress, I would suggest contacting your medical professional as soon as possible to get started. I'm excited to see what you guys find out and good luck!

  2. This is a great idea! I like how you both are tackling it straight on even though it is a tricky subject. Osteoporosis is a huge problem in today's world. Many people suffer from detrimental injuries caused by it. My family friend's grandparent actually broke her femur, the hardest bone to break in the body, because she had osteoporosis. It took her the better part of a year to be able to get up and walk again. If you guys could even come up with some remote ideas on how to solve this phenomenon that would be amazing. The only question I would have is, what do you plan to do with the information? publish your findings? pass is on to a medical professional to conduct tests? How will your idea become a possibility for a future treatment?

  3. This is a really good idea that directly addresses a problem that many people have. I would suggest researching how this condition occurs in the first place and then use that to look for a solution, as oppose to solving the problem once it has occurred. Since most of the current treatments for osteoporosis involve lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, etc.), would you take the same approach?

  4. This idea is really creative! I definitely like the idea of medical professional on how to increase bone strength, and going from there. I would suggest to include possible ways of treating the condition, such as a diet or exercise plan to supplement this project of "Superhuman Bone Strength." Just be sure your project's focus is not only studying the bone, but also on developing practical a solution,
